چکیده

This overview paper discusses the important role that synchrotron-based techniques play in addressing frontiers in water-rock interactions. Over the past decade, with the advent of cutting-edge molecular scale in-situ analytical techniques, significant advances have occurred in determining the speciation and sorption/release mechanisms of metals, oxyanions, and other contaminants in soil and water environments. These frontiers in molecular environmental science have major impacts on remediation efforts, development of predictive models, and bioavailability assessments. This paper will emphasize the use of synchrotron-based techniques, including micro-focused x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopies and micro-tomography to speciate and determine associations of metal(loid)s in soils and plants, and real-time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate microbially mediated transformations of contaminants.

Sustainable Ground Water Development in Hard Rock Aquifers in Low-Income Countries and the Role of UNESCO _ IUGS - IGCP projec -GROWNET-

Hard rock aquifers for the purpose of this Paper mean the non-carbonate, fractured rock aquifers in the terrain covered by crystalline basement complex, metamorphic rocks and also by extensive effusive volcanic rocks like the basalts of western India (Deccan traps. Ground water development in hard rock aquifer areas has always played a secondary role compared to that in the areas having high-yi...

Mechanism of Calf thymus DNA radioprotection by sucrose: A combined effect of scavenging action and altered water

Background: Development of safe radioprotector is a challenging task. In this study radioprotective effect of sucrose has been demonstrated in calf thymus DNA (CtDNA). Sucrose is a free radical scavenger and also acts as osmolyte and therefore can influence the water activity around DNA and effects of radiation on DNA. Hoechst 33258 was used to probe the possible alteration in physicochemical p...

Assuring Sustainable Economic Benefit for Farmers by Using Ground Water in Semi-Arid, Hard Rock Areas in India & the Role of UNESCO-IUGS-IGCP Project 523

Out of about 1.2 billion people in India, 68% people live on agriculture as their main occupation. Ground water is therefore an important resource which provides over 70% of rural drinking water supply and about 50% of water used for irrigation. Rains in Monsoon season from June to September, provide the main source of water but they last only for four months and the rest of the year is dry in ...

Evaluation of TBM Utilization Using Rock Mass Rating System: A Case Study of Karaj-Tehran Water Conveyance Tunnel (Lots 1 and 2)

Successful application of a TBM in a project requires investigating both the ground conditions and the machine and backup system design features. Prediction of the machine performance is very important as it has a big effect on the duration of the project and the costs. In this respect, both penetration rate and advance rate must be estimated. Utilization factor, which depends on the type of op...
